Abstract

I will discuss massless Dirac fermions interacting with a relativistic photon in 2+1 spacetime dimensions. After reviewing what is known about the dynamics of this strongly-coupled theory in the Lorentz-invariant vacuum, I will study it in the presence of a uniform magnetic field. When the field is sufficiently strong, this problem can be solved exactly. The resulting ground state spontaneously breaks some of the global symmetries, and we can precisely compute the spectrum of excitations and the low-energy effective action in this state.
